William is 7 when he boards the ship Mecca with his mother and siblings (except sister Jane). The Mecca departs Penzance and arrives in New York on 5 July of 1849.

A year later, William’s family was living in Pennsylvania.

The 1856 Iowa Census records the family farming in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa. William is 13 years old.

By 1860 William is working with his father and brothers on the family farm in Jefferson County, Iowa.

By the 1870 William has married Hannah and their first child Lyman is only four months old. Census details as follows:

The 1900 US Census reveals William & Hannah living in Jackson, Iowa. Their three youngest children are with them in Willis, Gertrude and Stacy. Willis is helping his father with the farm, Gertrude is a school teacher and Stacy is still at school.

By the 1910 US Census William & Hannah are still on the farm near Jackson, Iowa. Gertrude is now a school teacher whilst Stacy is listed as a farm manager. The date of immigration of 1860 for William is incorrect.

By the 1920 US Census the family has moved to Kimberly, Twin Falls County, Idaho. Hannah is listed first as the head and with them are Gertrude and Stacy.

US CIVIL WAR SERVICE – UNION ARMY
According to the Roster & Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of Rebellion, William enlisted on 8 Jul 1863 as a private in Company B, 8th Calvary Regiment. It was on 28 May 1864 that William was wounded near Burnt Church, Georgia. William was mustered out on 11 May 1865 at Davenport, Iowa.
