Growing up Thomas helped his family with farming duties.  Like his brothers Thomas signed up to serve with the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in the 19th Iowa Voluntary Infantry in B Company on 29 Feb 1864.   Records indicate he was  later tranferred to Company A, 29th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Thomas was mustered out on 10 Aug 1865 at New Orleans. After the war he established a blacksmith business in Ottumwa and seems to have worked in this occupation for the rest of his working life. By 1915 Thomas was retired and by 1920 Thomas and Sarah has moved to Pomona in California.
