Gideon was only 18 months old when he left Cornwall and he arrived in New York on 5 July 1849 aboard the ship Mecca.  With his siblings Gideon was raised on a farm near Buchanan in Jefferson County, Iowa. He was 15 when his father Thomas Sampson died. A few years later Gideon was keen to serve in the Union Army as his older brothers had done. One of which, Ezekiel was unwilling to let Gideon then 18, a mere lad, go alone and  together they enlisted in the 23rd Illinois Infantry Regiment in the last months of the American Civil War. In army documentation Gideon was described as a farmer of five feet five inches height with grey eyes and a light complexion. Gideon was recruited by Captain James and he entered the service at Chicago for one year on 14 Mar 1865. As the war ended in July of that year Gideon served for a period of four months.

After the Civil War Gideon chose to become a teacher which occupation he would follow for most of his working life. After Gideon married Myrtle Ann Rhodes their home was established in Agency City where Gideon was engaged in teaching. Whilst here Ernest and Fred were born. In 1877 due to health issues with Gideon the family moved  in the summer of 1877 to Kansas. The change was beneficial with Gideon soon back at his old work as superintendent of the Great Bend schools in Kansas.
