Perranuthnoe – St Hilary Sampson Family Groupings

This page is dedicated to identifying family groups based on the parish records for Perranuthnoe and St. Hilary. For families living in the Goldsithney area, which belonged to the Parish of Perranuthnoe, it was geographically closer to register events at the church at St. Hilary. It needs to be stated that these groupings are based on some assumptions due to the lack of information we have and no doubt there will need to be corrections. If you find what you believe to be a mistake then please contact. Unless otherwise stated, the dates given below are for Perranuthnoe.

The earliest recordings for the Sampson family occur in these Perranuthnoe baptismal records:

Frances Sampson & unknown wife have three children

  • Edward Sampson 30 Nov 1575
  • John Sampson 18 May 1577
  • Joan Sampson 25 Jan 1581

The Phillimore Index lists a marriage record for John Sampson and Christian Morl[e]y on 16 Jun 1595. This is an error as the actual parish records have been checked. The correct date for this marriage is 16 Jun 1695.

There appears to be a gap in the records as the next Sampson record is for Frances Sampson’s marriage to Mary Sleape in Perranuthnoe  24 Nov 1628. It is possible that Frances was the son of Edward or John listed above.

The next Sampson entry is for a Frances, who married Jane Layty at Perranuthnoe on 24 Dec 1633. It is possible that the Frances that married Mary is the same Frances whom marries Jane. Jane Layty was baptised 23 Jun 1609 in Perranuthnoe and was a daughter of Henrye Layty.

The next possibility is that Frances & Jane Sampson has a son called Mathias, who was baptised at Perranuthnoe on 30 Mar 1644. The name Mathias is a variant for Matthew.

The next assumption is that this Matthew (Mathias) Sampson married Jane Steaven on 14 Nov 1668 at Perranuthnoe. Jane was from Breage and her father was listed as John Steaven. Jane was buried 6 Feb 1670. Thus the baptismal records indicate Matthew & Jane had only two children:

  • John Sampson baptised 7 Mar 1668 Buried 26 May 1716
  • Miriam Sampson  baptised 12 Jun 1670 Buried 4 May 1709

Another Sampson entry in the parish records appears for Bennet Sampson whose son Edward was baptised at Perranuthnoe on 14 Feb 1691. Bennet married Anne Perkinn at Breage  on 29 Nov 1684. Bennet later remarried in Breage to Anna Williams on 24 Jun 1699.

The next Sampson entry in the parish registers is the marriage of John Sampson (son of Matthew & Jane Sampson) and Christian Morly in Perranuthnoe on 16 Jun 1695. The following children are found in the baptismal records:

  • Mathias 22 Dec 1695  marries Ann Simons at St Stitians  11 Jul 1726
  • John 4 Jun 1699 marries Hannah Rodda 7 Dec 1724
  • Thomas 5 Jul 1702 marries Ann James 8 Apr 1727
  • William 13 May 1705 marries Joan Strick at Breage 6 Feb 1732
  • Jane 27 Mar 1708 Did she marry Thomas Baynard 8 Jun 1739 Madron?
  • Miriam 2 Mar 1711 (At St Hilary) Buried 10 Aug 1715
  • Miriam 25 Sep 1715 Buried 17 Oct 1737

  • John Sampson 28 Dec 1749 marries Hannah Stevens 12 Jan 1776
