LUDGVAN CHURCH

THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. PAULS, LUDGVAN, CORNWALL

This series of photographs of the Ludgvan Church were taken in October 2019. Purely by coincidence the church graveyard had just had a busy bee with the grass cut back. The sun was out providing ideal conditions in which  to examine the grave headstones.

To the left is the oldest headstone with the Sampson family name. It reads:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF JANE
WIFE OF THOMAS SAMPSON
WHO DIED AT CROWLAS
FEB 3RD 1883
AGED 56 YEARS
OTHER REFUGE HAVE I NONE
HANGS MY HELPLESS SOUL ON THEE
ALSO THOMAS SAMPSON
WHO DIED SEP 24 1889
AGED 66 YEARS
ROCK OF AGES CLEFT FOR ME
LET ME HIDE MYSELF IN THEE
LET THE WATER AND THE BLOOD
FROM THY RIVEN SIDE WHICH FLOWED
BE OF SIN THE DOUBLE CURE
CLEANSE ME FROM ITS GUILT AND POWER

At this time it is not known if and how this couple are connected to our family lines. Thomas and Jane married 9 Sep 1848 at Ludgvan. In the marriage record Thomas is listed as a miner as was his father Thomas Sampson. Jane were born in Ludgvan on 15 Dec 1826 as Jane Hosking Semmens to parents Gideon Warren & Ann Semmens. The 1881 Census for Lugdvan revealed that Thomas  was born in St Hilary! He was baptised  16 Mar 1823 at St Hilary. He was the son of Thomas & Mary Ann Sampson of Tregurtha. His father Thomas Sampson married Mary Ann Chino 30 Nov 1822 at St Hilary. The marriage record states that Thomas Sampson was residing at Ludgvan.
